How to Reduce Image Dimensions — Complete Guide

Reducing image dimensions means lowering the pixel width and height of an image. This guide covers every method — exact pixel width, percentage scaling, exact file size targets and format conversion — all running 100% in your browser.

  • No upload · 100% local
  • Pixel-exact dimensions
  • Batch + ZIP download

What does “reduce image dimensions” mean?

Reducing image dimensions means lowering the pixel width and height of an image, for example turning a 4000 × 3000 px photo into 1920 × 1440 px. Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP file into the tool above, type a new width in pixels (or pick a scale like 50%) with the aspect ratio locked, then download the result. Fewer pixels also means a smaller file, so cutting dimensions is the fastest fix for an image that is still too large after compression. Decoding and resizing happen on your device, so nothing is uploaded and there is no limit on how many images you can run.

Reduce image dimensions in the same 3 steps

No matter which tool you open, the workflow is identical — upload, set the new pixel dimensions, download. Each tool page only pre-fills the settings for you.

1

Drop your images

Drag & drop JPG, PNG or WebP files, or click the zone to browse. Batch upload is supported and nothing is uploaded to a server.

2

Set the new dimensions

Enter a target width in pixels or pick a scale such as 50%, keep the aspect ratio locked, then choose the output format and quality or an exact target file size.

3

Compare & download

Check the before/after preview with the new pixel dimensions and saving ratio, then download one file or the whole batch as ZIP.

Reduce image dimensions (pixel width & height)

Set an exact pixel width or scale the image by percentage, with the aspect ratio locked by default. This is the most effective way to shrink an oversized photo.

Reduce to 1920px

Standard full-width banner dimensions

Sets the long edge to 1920 px, which is the classic full-width website banner width. The height is calculated automatically to keep the photo proportional.

Open the tool, then drop your JPG, PNG or WebP files (or click to browse). The settings are already applied — Output IMAGE/WEBP · Width 1920 px · Quality 82% — so you can adjust only if you want. Compare the before/after preview and download a single file or the whole batch as ZIP.
Open Reduce to 1920px

Reduce by 50%

Halve the pixel dimensions in one click

Scales both width and height to 50%, removing 75% of the pixels. Use this when you want a smaller image but do not need an exact final width.

Open the tool, then drop your JPG, PNG or WebP files (or click to browse). The settings are already applied — Output IMAGE/WEBP · Scale 50% · Quality 82% — so you can adjust only if you want. Compare the before/after preview and download a single file or the whole batch as ZIP.

What dimensions should you reduce an image to?

Match the pixel dimensions to where the image is displayed. Anything larger than twice its display width only wastes bandwidth.

Image dimensions vs file size — which one should you reduce?

Reduce the dimensions

Dimensions are the pixel width × height, such as 1920 × 1080 px. Halving them removes about 75% of the pixels, so this is the strongest way to shrink an oversized photo. Choose it when the image is far larger than the space it is displayed in.

Reduce the file size

File size is the KB or MB on disk. Lowering quality or switching to WebP shrinks the file while every pixel stays in place. Choose it when the resolution must be preserved but an upload form enforces a 100KB or 200KB limit.

Do both at once

The best results come from combining them: reduce the image dimensions to the real display width first, then export to WebP at quality 80 to 85. A 4000 px photo trimmed to 1200 px WebP typically loses 90% of its bytes with no visible difference.

WebP vs JPG vs PNG for resized images

Reducing image dimensions — FAQ

How do I reduce image dimensions online?
Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP file into the upload area, open the dimensions panel, then type a new width in pixels. The height follows automatically because the aspect ratio is locked. If you would rather think in percentages, pick a scale such as 50% instead. The preview shows the new pixel dimensions beside the new file size within about a second, and you download from there. No upload, no account, nothing to install.
What is the difference between image dimensions and file size?
Dimensions are the pixel width and height, like 1920 × 1080 px. File size is what the encoded file weighs on disk, in KB or MB. They move together but they are not the same thing. Halving the dimensions removes roughly three quarters of the pixels and usually shrinks the file dramatically, while compression lowers the file size without touching the dimensions at all. This tool controls both.
How small can I go before the image looks bad?
Match the size to where the image is displayed. A blog column that renders at 800px does not need a 4000px photo, and the extra pixels cost you nothing but bandwidth. Going below roughly twice the display width is where you start to see softness on retina screens. Downscale in one step rather than repeatedly, keep the aspect ratio locked, and export WebP at quality 80 to 85 for photos.
Can I hit an exact file size like 20KB or 100KB?
Yes. Switch the compression mode to Target size and choose 20KB, 50KB, 100KB, 200KB, 500KB or 1MB. The tool binary-searches the quality range for the highest quality that still fits your budget while keeping your dimensions, and only drops the resolution further if the target is otherwise unreachable. Export JPG or WebP for this. PNG is lossless, so a PNG can only reach a size target by losing pixels.
Can I reduce the dimensions of many images at once?
Drop in as many files as you like, set the width or percentage once, and the same dimensions are applied to the whole batch. Each image keeps its own aspect ratio, so a mixed set of portrait and landscape photos all come out right. Download the batch as a single ZIP. There is no server quota, so the practical ceiling is your device memory.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Decoding, resizing and re-encoding all run locally through the HTML5 Canvas API in your own browser, so your images never leave your device. Once the page has loaded you can disconnect from the internet and keep working. That matters for passport scans, signed contracts and client photos, which is the reason the tool was built this way.
Can I set an exact width and height and ignore the aspect ratio?
Yes. Turn off the aspect-ratio lock and enter both values to force exact dimensions. The image will be stretched to fill them, so edges and faces can distort. Leave the lock on and fill in one field when you want proportional downscaling, which is right in almost every case.
Does reducing image dimensions help page speed and SEO?
It is usually the single biggest win available. Oversized images are the most common cause of a poor Largest Contentful Paint score, and LCP feeds into Google rankings. Moving a 4000px photo down to the 1200px it is actually displayed at can cut transferred bytes by 80 to 90 percent. Exporting WebP instead of JPG saves another 25 to 35 percent at the same perceived quality.
Which image formats can I reduce?
You can open JPG/JPEG, PNG and WebP, plus GIF, BMP and AVIF in newer browsers, and export to WebP, JPG or PNG. HEIC files from iPhones will not open, because most browsers cannot decode HEIC through Canvas. Convert those on the phone first, in Settings or by exporting from Photos.
Is this image dimension reducer really free?
Yes. Resizing, format conversion, target-size compression and batch ZIP export are free with no account, no watermark and no daily limit. There is no subscription to sell because the processing runs on your own device, so there is no server bill to pass on.
