Image dimensions vs file size — which one should you reduce?
Reduce the dimensions
Dimensions are the pixel width × height, such as 1920 × 1080 px. Halving them removes about 75% of the pixels, so this is the strongest way to shrink an oversized photo. Choose it when the image is far larger than the space it is displayed in.
Reduce the file size
File size is the KB or MB on disk. Lowering quality or switching to WebP shrinks the file while every pixel stays in place. Choose it when the resolution must be preserved but an upload form enforces a 100KB or 200KB limit.
Do both at once
The best results come from combining them: reduce the image dimensions to the real display width first, then export to WebP at quality 80–85. A 4000 px photo trimmed to 1200 px WebP typically loses 90% of its bytes with no visible difference.

How do I reduce image dimensions online?

What is the difference between image dimensions and file size?
Dimensions are the pixel width and height, like 1920 × 1080 px. File size is what the encoded file weighs on disk, in KB or MB. They move together but they are not the same thing. Halving the dimensions removes roughly three quarters of the pixels and usually shrinks the file dramatically, while compression lowers the file size without touching the dimensions at all. This tool controls both.
How small can I go before the image looks bad?
Match the size to where the image is displayed. A blog column that renders at 800px does not need a 4000px photo, and the extra pixels cost you nothing but bandwidth. Going below roughly twice the display width is where you start to see softness on retina screens. Downscale in one step rather than repeatedly, keep the aspect ratio locked, and export WebP at quality 80 to 85 for photos.
Can I hit an exact file size like 20KB or 100KB?
Yes. Switch the compression mode to Target size and choose 20KB, 50KB, 100KB, 200KB, 500KB or 1MB. The tool binary-searches the quality range for the highest quality that still fits your budget while keeping your dimensions, and only drops the resolution further if the target is otherwise unreachable. Export JPG or WebP for this. PNG is lossless, so a PNG can only reach a size target by losing pixels.
Can I reduce the dimensions of many images at once?

Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Decoding, resizing and re-encoding all run locally through the HTML5 Canvas API in your own browser, so your images never leave your device. Once the page has loaded you can disconnect from the internet and keep working. That matters for passport scans, signed contracts and client photos, which is the reason the tool was built this way.
Can I set an exact width and height and ignore the aspect ratio?
Yes. Turn off the aspect-ratio lock and enter both values to force exact dimensions. The image will be stretched to fill them, so edges and faces can distort. Leave the lock on and fill in one field when you want proportional downscaling, which is right in almost every case.
Does reducing image dimensions help page speed and SEO?
